Four Plants That Can Thrive All Year

For people who are only starting to garden, or are still contemplating whether to do it, the thought of a high maintenance and costly hobby can be off-putting. According to Garden Research’s survey in 2018, 77 percent of households are gardening, more than ever before. The study found that 18-34 is the age group contributing to this increase, with the number of green-thumbs in this generation making gardening reach an all-time high.

Despite this increase of people who are trying their hand, some potential gardeners are reluctant to start. Some common worries include the lack of a spacious garden, and reluctance to transfer plants from containers to the ground and back again with the changing seasons. While gardening does require planters and some tools, this hobby doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.

For instance, instead of moving your plants into pots and shelter once the air turns chilly, care for perennials and shrubs that can survive in containers all year round. If you’re on a budget or don’t have space, invest in square planter boxes that are large enough to let plants bloom, thrive, and survive all year round.

Depending on the plants you choose, taking care of them is less expensive and lower maintenance than you may think. Here are four plants that can thrive in planters all year round, no matter what the season.

Viburnum Opulus

Also referred to as the snowball tree, these white flowers bloom at the end of the spring and will continue through summer with dark green leaves. Throughout the year, snowball trees will gradually change color but will continue to be an attractive addition to your home garden.

Hibiscus

This plant is popular because it is durable and adaptable. As a sub-tropical plant, it can be kept anywhere above 50˚F, flowering year-round. With the plant’s varying color combinations, shapes, and sizes, hibiscus can remain healthy and vibrant as long as you give it water and light.

Asters

Aside from its attractive lavender color, star-shaped head, and long thin petals, asters are also known for their long life and ability to survive any climate.  Asters also encourage butterflies to your garden.

Iberis

Also known as candytuft, this type of evergreen plant can stay healthy and develop beautiful white flowers during spring and summer. However, this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t look attractive during other seasons. In the autumn, expect it to re-bloom and create a white blanket like appearance with clusters of layered petals with a dainty green center.

Taking care of plants, whether indoors or outdoors, can be challenging, especially for beginners. Remember that to become an experienced gardener; it takes is a few trials and errors, some effort and patience, and quality containers to keep your plants healthy and safe.
